Pediatric Urology

Pediatric urology is a subdivision of urology treating the children’s problems in area of urinal tracts and genitalia. Kids have some specific problems different from those adult have. Pediatric urology in Germany where urologic medicine is one of the best in the world, many medical centers pay special attention to diagnostic and treatment urological disorders in children. Pediatricians of Clinic of Braunschweig together with pediatric urologists treat kids with care trying not only to cure the disease but also to contribute to wholesome habits.

Pediatric Urological Diseases

Among the common urological conditions occurring in children you may enumerate the following:

  • Enuresis (incontinence)
  • Neurogenic bladder (spina bifida)
  • Urinary infections
  • Pediatric genital abnormalities
  • Obstructed kidney
  • Vesicoureteral Reflux
  • Tumors

The problems when working with small patient is that they cannot explain what happens and you need a patience to find it. Pediatric urologists are not only specialists in urology and specific kid’s disorders but they also should be psychologists.

Enuresis Treatment

Enuresis is a key problem in pediatric urology. In Germany treatment of this problem reached a state-of-art condition. It is a whole system including both physiological and psychological measures to avoid this annoying problem.

There are a few types of enuresis. You can split them in terms of periods when it happens, as:

  • Diurnal enuresis (during the day)
  • Nocturnal enuresis (during the night)

And another gradation is based on a moment when it started:

  • Primary (the kid never was able to keep urine)
  • Secondary (the kid started using toiled normally but then returned)

With children, it is very important to understand whether the problem is a matter of discipline or it has physiological roots. That is the reason why pediatric urologists always work together with children’s psychologists, as well as the parents. In first case, the child needs proper training. Otherwise, he or she requires a professional treatment. Organic problems may include: the small bladder, hormonal disorders, sleep disorders and others.

Urinary Infections in Children

Sometimes incontinence can follow together with other symptoms and, probably, may indicate a urinary infection. Other symptoms are:

  • The child may claim burning in genital area
  • Frequent urination
  • Urgency to urinate
  • Bad small of urine
  • Cloudy urine
  • Fever

If a few of above symptoms are present, probably, your child has an infection. It is necessary to have examination and urine laboratorial study.

Pediatric Genital Abnormalities

There is a range of pediatric urological problems which related to abnormal shape or body defects in genital area. Among the common condition of that type you could name:

  • Hypospadia. The most common abnormality when urethral opening is displaced from the tip of the penis. Sometimes it goes along with chordee. Often surgical treatment is recommended.
  • Epispadia. This condition includes a few penis curvatures as well as hypospadia.
  • Chordee. It is a curvature of penis.
  • Inguinal hernia. Hernias are rather common in children.
  • Undescended testicles. A defect characterized with testicles remaining in abdominal area.
  • Male/Female Genitalia. Hermaphroditism with both male and female genitalia present.
  • Bladder Exstrophy. It is abnormal (flat) form of the bladder and bony penis.

Vesicoureteral Reflux

Vesicoureteral reflux is a children’s urological disorder characterized with flowing (reflux) of urine back into the kidney. It happens because of a defect of a valve separating the bladder and the ureter. Sometimes this condition may be self treated with child growing but, mostly, intervention is needed. In many cases, a pediatric urologist, first, may decide waiting until it becomes clearer if disorder can resolve itself or not. Even in this case, the condition should be treated with medicine to avoid infections.

Kidney Stones

Nephrolithiasis, or kidney stones, is a condition that affects not only adult but children too. The symptoms of kidney stones are:

  • Low back pain
  • Painful urination
  • Blood in urine
  • Nausea / vomiting

Normally, the stone pass themselves. You need to give more beverages to your child and pain reliving medication suggested by or pediatrician.
