With its 90 beds, the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine takes over the in-patient care of children and adolescents of the Braunschweig region. Each year approximately 6,000 patients are treated here as an inpatient and approximately 10,000 as outpatient. We offer the full spectrum of medical cervices as a clinic of maximum care and treat all diseases of the newborn, children and adolescents.
The clinic is located in two sites. In addition to the main building on Holwedestraße, the children's intensive care unit is located close to the women's clinic on Cellerstraße, and together with the Women's Clinic it forms a Perinatal Center for the care of premature and newborn infants (Level I). In this Perinatal Center, premature babies of all maturity levels, even very small premature babies with birth weights below 500 g, will be competently taken care of at any time.
The treatment of other children and adolescents at the site on Holwedestraße is carried out in 5 additional stations with different focus. The co-hospitalisation of a patient's parent is possible as far as the capacities permit. In addition, there is a separate parent station, that allows parents to live in the hospital premises near their child. Some examinations can be completed within one day. For such cases, a children's outpatient ward is available.
The medical care in the area of the Pediatric Department take over 27 physicians. These include numerous specialists, as well as specially trained staff in the area of neonatal medicine, neuropathy, childhood cancer as well as children and adolescents doctors with further specializations.
More than 100 health and children nurses as well as trainees from the area of childcare and nursing care work in the Pediatric Department. Specially qualified pediatric nurses are employed in the intensive care unit as well as in the childhood cancer ward.
If necessary, three physiotherapists from the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine are ready to take care of the patients in the ward or in physiotherapy rooms. A total of four nurses are available for our small patients at the stations. Especially for the Department for Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine there is also a pastor. Psychological care is also guaranteed by the psychologist of the children's clinic.
