Professor MD Thomas Gösling
The Department of Neurosurgery, headed by Prof. MD Wolf-Peter Sollmann, and the Clinic for Trauma and Orthopedic Surgery, led by Prof. MD Thomas Gösling, provide the comprehensive care for patients with severe spinal injuries. Complex injuries or disorders of the spine are treated jointly by the interdisciplinary team of surgeons and neurosurgeons.
We successfully treat patients with severe spinal injuries, who suffer from neurological symptoms, e.g. a spinal paralysis. Such injuries are often caused by high speed car accidents or falls from high buildings.
Another patient group is cancer patients, who suffer from metastases in the spine. These patients are treated in close cooperation with the Oncological clinic and the Clinic for radiooncology and radiotherapy. The Center of the spinal surgery is also integrated into the interdisciplinary „Tumor board“ of the Clinic of Braunschweig. The third group of patients are people with wear-related spinal deformities.
The treatment of all the patients is supervised by the two senior physicians, MD Ernst Rzesacz, from the Trauma Surgery Clinic and MD Martin Willmann from the Neurosurgery Department. They offer a common consultation hour, in which they examine and consult the patients with spinal injuries and degenerative diseases of spine. The patients can thus benefit from the interdisciplinary approach as well as from the know-how and competence of the two specialist areas. Both doctors also perform surgical treatment of spinal cord disorders. Their particular field of expertise are the neurosurgical treatment of severe cases of disc herniation and the surgical management of the vertebral fractures.
