Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery is a term for several types of eye surgeries performed with help of laser systems. Often laser eye surgery is also called refractive surgery as it is used to correct refractive errors that appear when the light is focusing wrongly on the retina because of deformed (not ideal) eyeball. Laser eye surgery in Germany is highly developed area of ophthalmology allowing improving vision problems of the patients, as well as treating of a number of eye diseases, e.g. cataract. In the Eye Clinic of Braunschweig we have four types of lasers we apply to different surgeries.

Laser Eye Surgery

Types of Eye Laser Surgery Used in Germany

Eye laser surgery in Germany, as well as in other countries is used both for vision correction, allowing to get rid of patient’s dependence on eyeglasses and contact lenses, and eye therapy. Germany is a country with a great vision correction history and some of recognized systems for eye laser surgery were designed in Germany by such well-known companies as Carl Zeiss Meditec AG and 20/10 Perfect Vision.

Here you can find the main types of eye laser surgery in the modern ophthalmology:

LASIK

LASIK (Laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis) is the most widely used technique of refractive surgery. It involves cutting a flap in cornea manually but, then cornea is reshaped by laser. LASIK is used for such conditions as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism.

Wavefront guided LASIK

Custom Wavefront LASIK is tailored procedure providing highest preciseness as it is designed individually for every patient. It become possible thank to advanced wave front technology of eye exam.

Intra LASIK

This is a kind of LASIK procedure with use of IntraLase femtosecond laser.

Photorefractive Keratectomy

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) is another popular kind of eye laser surgery in Germany, which is also intended to vision improvement. It was one of the first laser techniques to treat refractive conditions and it was the main procedure to for vision correction but, then, it was dislodged with LASIK. In this method a flap is not created but removal a part of cornea is involved.

Using PRK an eye doctor, first, removes the outer part of the cornea and, then, reshapes the anterior cornea vaporizing it by laser, which is called ablation. Comparing to LASIK PRK allows avoiding the risk related to flap cutting but LASIK shows better results in recovery time as well as produces less pain. As to the effectiveness of the procedure, the latest researches demonstrated that in one year perspective both surgeries have the similar effect.

LASEK

LASEK (laser epithelial keratomileusis) is an eye laser surgery technique which is similar to PRK, but in LASEK an ophthalmologist uses alcohol to move out (but not to remove completely) epithelial layer. It is considered good for patients with thing epithelium.

Phototherapeutic keratectomy

If PRK is a vision corrective surgery, phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) is used for therapeutic purposes to treat eye diseases involving removal parts of cornea as opacities and scars treatment, cornea dystrophy etc.

ReLex Smile

ReLex Smile (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) presents 3rd generation of eye laser surgery. Designed in Germany by company Carl Zeiss it offers minimally invasive flapless method to correct vision. It involves femtosecond laser which has lower pulse duration (10-15 second) comparing to Nd:YAG laser (10-9 second) and considered safer.

ReLex Smile technique can be used for refractive surgery achieving same effect as LASIK but with faster recovery and reinnervation of corneal nerves. Pemtosecond laser is also used in cataract surgery giving benefits comparing with traditional manual and ultrasound techniques.

Laser Eye Surgery Advantages

Among the advantages of laser eye surgery you may find the following:

  • Easy and quick way to restore vision
  • Little pain
  • Quick recovery
  • Low risk of complications

Disadvantages of Laser Eye Surgery

  • Laser Eye Surgery is not reversible
  • You may need another surgery of case of further impairment of vision
  • Dry eyes effect
  • Glare
  • Seeing halos around images
  • Fluctuating vision

Please note that the most of the mention side effects are rare and 95% of people enjoy their vision without using eyewear.
